How to Be Led by the Holy Spirit

Foundation Scriptures:
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  Romans 8:14 KJV

  1. The sons of God are led by His Spirit.
    a. As a child of God, one of the greatest and most important things that you can learn, and master, is the ability to hear God’s voice and to be led by His Spirit.
    b. Romans 8:14
    c. Romans 8:16 KJV – “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
    d. When the Holy Spirit lives in us, He will enlighten us and guide us through our own spirits.
    e. Proverbs 20:27 KJV – “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.”
  2. We need to become spirit-conscious.
    a. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV – “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
    b. I am a spirit-being. I have a soul. I live in a body.
    c. There is a difference between spirit and soul.
    d. Hebrews 4:12 KJV – “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
    e. 1 Corinthians 14:14 KJV – “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth…”
    f. James 2:26 KJV – “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
    g. James 1:21 KJV – “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”
    h. Hebrews 10:39 KJV – “But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”
    i. You cannot receive the Word of God or the things of the Spirit of God while you are filled with the spirit of the world and yielding yourself to sin and uncleanness.
    j. Romans 12:1 KJV – “I beseech you therefore,
brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

    k. 1 Corinthians 9:27 – “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
  3. The number one way God leads us is through the inward witness.
    a. God does not lead you through your head – your thoughts – He leads you only through your spirit man!
    b. He leads you through an inward intuition.
    c. When God leads you in a direction, you might feel: a desire in your spirit toward that thing; a peace; a green light; or a go-ahead.
    d. When you are heading in the wrong direction God will restrain you, you might feel: a check; a red light; or be grieved in your spirit.
    e. 1 John 5:10 KJV – “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.”
    f. 1 John 3:14 KJV – “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.”
    g. 1 John 3:24 KJV – “And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”
    h. Romans 9:1 KJV – “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost.”
    i. Colossians 3:15 AMP – “And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]…”
    j. Ezekiel 36:26-27 KJV – “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”
    k. Never put out a fleece.
    l. Judges 6:37-40 KJV – “Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. 38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. 40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.”
    m. The enemy can influence the circumstances.
  4. Following the inward witness.
    a. Psalm 18:28 KJV – “For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.”
    b. Don’t be in a hurry.
    c. Isaiah 28:16 KJV – “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”
    d. You can train your spirit and you can trust the inward witness of the Spirit to lead and guide you.
    e. John 16:13-15 KJV – “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
